One of the conflicts I have experienced in the healthcare setting regards the divergent actions and opinions in carrying out a medical procedure due to communication breakdown. I was allocated the nursing intervention procedure for a patient exhibiting bacterial pneumonia but the instructions regarding medication and follow-up tests were a bit confusing from the admission orders sheet. However, I had the feeling that inquiring from the lead nurse about these instructions would depict my level of incompetence for the job. Moreover, some individuals have been dismissed from work due to erroneous interpretation of the admission orders that are often presented in a more complicated format. This situation, therefore, placed me in a dilemma of whether I should consult or continue with the procedure despite my lack of proper understanding. Since the patient’s situation was quite delicate and needed close attention with the administration of drugs as well as the required tests, I did not want to subject the patient to more danger. I therefore involved a member of my team who helped me deliver the required care according to the instructions given on the admission order.
The knowledge gained from nursing education and experience particularly emotional intelligence is quite important for handling similar conflicts in future. In particular, I have been able to understand that the healthcare setting including its workers such as nurses, physicians and other frontline workers are all vulnerable to miscommunication due to the stressful conditions they operate under (Pishgooie et al., 2019). Realizing that every individual is different, I will approach a similar situation in future by being keen on the attitudes of head nurses and employ appropriate personal and negotiation skills to solve and reduce similar conflicts from happening at the workplace (Shah, 2017). In particular, I will employ my teamwork skill by always involving my supervisor and other colleagues in the evaluation of the nursing intervention orders before embarking on the process (Kang, Lee, & Choi, 2017). This process is achievable by having a clear communication plan that is always in alignment with the professional code of conduct.
